Chief Diversity Officer

The Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) will lead a transformational agenda to infuse equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) throughout the work of the American Psychological Association (APA). This focus on EDI is a core value of the association, as reflected in its strategic plan and mission to advance psychology to benefit society and improve people’s lives. EDI is essential to optimal organizational functioning and a robust and impactful field of psychology.

While EDI is the priority and responsibility of the entire association, the CDO will play a leading role in interpreting, communicating, and promoting the goals of the association’s new EDI Framework. The CDO will collaborate with APA staff, leadership, and members to develop innovative strategies and systematic initiatives to achieve EDI goals related to the association and the field of psychology, as well as to benefit society at large. This position will report directly to the CEO, serve on the Executive Management Group, and work with APA’s Board of Directors and governance groups.

The CDO will lead efforts to enhance the capacity of staff, governance, and members to interact in culturally responsive ways to foster an inclusive and welcoming association climate and increase the effectiveness of APA’s efforts. The CDO will help to guide, integrate, monitor, and evaluate EDI-related activities across the association in keeping with APA’s strategic priorities, policies, and guidelines.

The CDO will also engage with key external organizations and other stakeholders to advance the association’s EDI goals. The CDO will serve as a spokesperson, champion, and advocate, both within and outside the association, for EDI in the field of psychology. 

The CDO will be responsible for overseeing a renewed organizational emphasis on EDI. As such, the CDO will serve as a primary resource for education, training, consultation, and resources related to EDI for association staff and members. The CDO will also work closely with APA’s Council of Representatives, Board of Directors, and boards and committees to develop systematic and coordinated strategies to orient and educate their members, other governance groups and Divisions, and the broader APA membership about EDI-related topics and issues.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:         

  • Doctoral degree in psychology
  • Minimum of 10 years of post-doctoral experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in leading, developing, and implementing diversity-related programs or initiatives
  • Minimum of 5 years of management experience in a nonprofit, academic, private, or public organization
  • Scholarly and evidence-based knowledge related to equity, diversity, and inclusion across an array of social identity domains (e.g., race, gender, and sexual orientation)
  • Demonstrated competence in working collaboratively and effectively with diverse stakeholders and constituents and in skillfully navigating diversity-related tensions and conflicts
  • Demonstrated competence in administration, strategy development, and fiscal management
