Background

Since 1956, AABR has provided empowering educational services, housing, clinical support, and innovative programming for both children and adults with developmental disabilities by promoting independence, inclusion and individuality.

AABR is committed to charting new courses in services for the developmentally disabled by encouraging the people they serve to explore their strengths, talents and abilities  to enable them to achieve their highest potential, and to developing social interactions with their peers. During the 1970’s, AABR pioneered the first long-term residence in St. Albans, Queens and its ground breaking school, dedicated to children with blindness and intellectual disabilities. The school became a programming model for NYC’s Board of Education providing children and their families with hope.

Answering a call to a great need and continuing its mission, “May each Life find Meaning”, AABR prides itself on the dedication and high morale of its staff and the distinctive homes where people live and work.  AABR is committed to its history of caring and inclusion.  The organization is well known for the quality of its residences and services as well as its ability to accommodate medically fragile populations. From residential facilities to work sites run for and by individuals with disabilities to the New York Child Learning Institute, a school for children with autism, programming and services are equipped to support people with special needs to lead their own lives with their own dreams.

AABR provides support for more than 1,000 individuals through 30 related day habilitation and educational programs, and housing for 162 individuals in 22 group homes throughout New York City and one vacation home on the East End of Long Island in Mattituk.

The Adult Day Program offers an environment that maximizes the individual’s capability of developing a lifestyle of productivity, education, leisure and empowerment. The Day Program also maximizes the individual’s participation in the local community through work, its “give back program” of volunteerism and community service, operating agency sponsored stores and participating in community shopping and inclusion.

The Residential Program offers an individualized therapeutic setting, which maintains service plans and delivery systems that are outcome oriented.  All services are person-centered. 

AABR’s New York Child Learning Institute (NYCLI), a non-public school for children with autism, is recognized as a preeminent school in New York State, producing educational and treatment gains that enable language acquisition and social and academic skills comparable to their peers. Family Service Program department offers advocacy, referral and linkage to services in the community for both children and adults. The program provides further assistance for those living on their own to reach their full potential reaching personal goals, becoming involved in their communities and developing work readiness to lead to gainful employment.

AABR’s other programs includes an adult program designed to facilitate the growth of individuals with autism by participating in meaningful activities within the context of a “whole person” life plan and a “Drop-in Center” that facilitates opportunities to socialize, develop friendships, and participate in recreation activities with peers and community friends.

Headquartered in College Point in Queens, NY and with sites and group homes throughout New York City, AABR has an annual operating budget of $38M and the year 2017-2018 closes with a strong financial position. Position

The CEO is accountable to the Board of Directors and reports to the Chair of the AABR Board. S/he is responsible for continuing and building on the vision and strategic direction of this mission-driven, non-profit organization and providing leadership to maintain AABR as a premier provider of disability services within New York City.

The CEO is responsible for ensuring superior standards of person-centered care and service delivery, progressive service growth and sound business expansion, a positive reputation with stakeholder groups, as well as  ethical conduct throughout the organization.

The CEO guides operational and administrative oversight of all system operations, thereby ensuring AABR’s financial and legal integrity. S/he fosters a culture of collaboration and innovation within and between the provider community and the staff of AABR.  As the senior leader for AABR, the CEO ensures that AABR’s operational protocols are in alignment with the strategic objectives of the organization and that employees are continually informed and included in those processes to maximize individual contributions to the mission.

It is also expected that the CEO be at the forefront of anticipating any external factors that might impact AABR.  Integral to the CEO’s success will be the ability to see change and opportunity and then position AABR strategically to respond accordingly in adherence to the organization’s mission.  As part of Managed Care arriving in New York State in 2018, the CEO will ensure the organization’s continued transition into this service model.  The CEO will need to think and act with flexibility, creativity, and thoughtfulness in guiding the board and staff through growth and transitions. 

The CEO will ensure that the organization is appropriately staffed in order to fulfill the organization’s mission and implement its vision. S/he provides leadership and direction to a dedicated and diverse staff. Reporting to the CEO will be the Assistant Executive Director along with the leads within Compliance, Finance, HR, Fundraising and Marketing, NYCLI, Training, and Maintenance.

Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership

  • Create an organizational environment that reflects an absolute commitment to mission and the continuing pursuit of quality improvement throughout the organization.
  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, management, staff development, fundraising, communications, and operations systems.
  • Set the strategic direction for increased revenue generation with proven track record for operational and implementation excellence.
  • Cultivate a strategic partnership relationship with the Board, seeking counsel and advice as needed to develop agency policy, strategic planning, emerging issues and appropriate solutions.
  • Lead AABR in planning and managing for current and future growth.
  • Appropriately balance market, competitive, organizational, and technological factors to make positive, efficient and effective decisions.
  • Anticipate trends, events, problems, and opportunities and act as a catalyst initiating and leading change.
  • Seek new opportunities for service growth both in the public and private sectors with strategic alliances and business opportunities to support the mission and vision of the organization.
  • Focus the organization on efforts that add value to clients, employees and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate a value for the human dignity and worth of both supervisors and clients and cultivate this expectation throughout the organization.  

Management

  • Ensure that the executive management group acts as a team that aligns the entire agency towards its critical objectives.
  • Anticipate obstacles and make provisions to overcome them.
  • Act quickly and decisively to seize new opportunities and respond to imminent threats.
  • Establish detailed steps, timetables, and resources required for achievement of short- and long-term objectives.
  • Challenge others with clear goals and responsibilities that result in achievement and ownership.
  • Ensure that the organization acts according to the highest legal, ethical, and professional standards in provision of services and in documentation.
  • Leverage conflict to encourage communication and strengthen relationships and achieve excellence.
  • Create an environment that attracts and retains high performers.
  • Foster an open environment for people to communicate candidly regarding problems, obstacles, and risks.
  • Ensure efficient and effective operations through sound business and fiscal practices throughout the organization.
  • Assess viability of programs and implement a business plan that prioritizes programs and projects going forward.

Community Development

  • Personally expands the visibility of the organization’s presence and develops relationships that garner new business and fundraising opportunities.
  • Actively seeks collaboration through partnerships with government entities, community based groups, and private sector agencies.
  • Is directly responsible for all public information releases pertaining to System operation.
  • Elevates AABR to a higher profile and level of brand awareness, both internally and externally.
  • Ensure an effective communication program is developed and maintained to promote positive relationships with stakeholder groups (people served, families, funders, state agencies, business partners, donors, and the public at large).

Finance

  • Assume responsibility for the financial health, stability, capacity, and planned growth of the organization.
  • Prepare, plan, and project a strategy that is approved by the Board and managed by the management team, to ensure a growing revenue stream.
  • Work with the Director of Development to expand private revenue generating strategies and fundraising activities that directly support existing and new programs.
  • Assess and assure financial feasibility of new initiatives being considered by AABR, based on changing community needs and priorities.
  • Direct staff processes for developing the annual budget and work closely with staff members to ensure a financially sound operation.
  • Monitor all finances and work closely with the Chief Financial Officer and Board to assure an efficient and cost effective operation.

Board Relations

  • Inform and advise the AABR Board of Directors with regard to significant environmental trends such as new service delivery models, changes in government policy, funding opportunities or challenges and market trends that could impact organizational directions and activities.
  • Working with Board leadership, create a dynamic, collaborative partnership between the organization’s voluntary Board of Directors and senior management to advance short and long term objectives, with particular emphasis on community outreach and fund raising activities.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in related direct services field. Experiences within a disabilities environment, helpful.
  • Master’s Degree in relevant field.
  • Demonstrated success in leadership role(s) managing complex organization(s) in a highly regulated environment.  Experience working within an organized labor setting, helpful.
  • Understanding of human services sector and the impact of legislation on it; knowledge of federal, NY regulations preferred, but not required.
  • Financial and political acumen, business, management and forecasting skills – ability to link strategic and operational goals to fiscal realities and program priorities.
  • Knowledge of new technologies applicable to the human services sector a plus.
  • Reputation as a team builder with demonstrated success leading, motivating and collaborating with a large group of professional and direct service staff.
  • Ability to articulate AABR’s message to a broad range of constituents and the general public.
