Chief Executive Officer


Pittsburgh, PA, USA

The CEO is responsible for the visionary, executive leadership of the enterprise, which includes the Hospice and Palliative Nursing Association (HPNA), the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center (HPCC), and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation (HPNF). The CEO is responsible for the fiscal and operational oversight and strategic planning of the enterprise-wide organizations and accountable for the implementation of the policies adopted by the Boards of Directors of HPNA, HPCC and HPNF.

The CEO is highly visible in the hospice and palliative care and healthcare arenas and will influence partnerships and opportunities to promote the mission, vision, and key priorities of the enterprise. The CEO is accountable to the Boards of Directors of HPNA, HPCC and HPNF.

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and Execution
1. Works collaboratively with the Boards in the development of strategic plans.
2. Holds Executive Leadership Team accountable to execute strategic plan tactics and provides on-going progress reports to show progress related to achievement of strategic goals and priorities established by the Boards.
3. Develops and implements appropriate infrastructure within the enterprise (national office) to achieve the strategic and long-term growth of the enterprise.
4. Keeps Board informed of current industry issues and trends.
5. Enhances the brand, image, and position of the enterprise by developing key strategic relationships with stakeholders in healthcare, hospice and palliative care, nursing, policy-making, advocacy, and certification industry. Represents the enterprise at national meetings, committees and at events, as appropriate.
6. Facilitates growth and promotes continuous improvement in service quality and member/customer satisfaction.
7. Utilizes appropriate external resources and services to protect the enterprise and meet strategic goals (e.g., legal, governance, consultants, vendors).
8. Responsible for ensuring a system to record and maintain pertinent governance and operational records and documents.

Fiscal Accountability
1. Ensures that processes and accountability structures are in place that comply with general acceptable accounting principles and federal and state laws.
2. Works with Board and Executive Leadership Team to develop and recommend appropriate budgets to meet strategic initiatives.
3. Provides routine financial reports to the Boards.
4. Evaluates each organization’s financial position and recommends strategies to ensure viability and growth.
5. Provides leadership and oversight for fiscal management, including preparation of annual budgets and other financial reports, in collaboration with the Treasurers of the Boards and the Chief Financial Officer.
6. Negotiates and maintains contracts on behalf of the organizations.
7. Facilitates financial growth across the enterprise by evaluating and implementing strategies to develop new/more robust sources of funding in order to achieve short- and long-term goals.
8. Oversee preparation of the annual report of activities and accomplishments of the organizations and Boards.

Organizational Effectiveness
1. Periodically reviews organizational infrastructure and recommends to the Boards strategies and tactics to meet the needs of the respective organizations.
2. The CEO is ultimately accountable for organizational outcomes and effectiveness. The CEO works in conjunction with the Executive Leadership team, who are responsible for day to day operations to ensure effective human and organizational infrastructure to support the needs and goals of the organizations.
3. Promotes a healthy environment in which staff performance is driven by achievement of goal-oriented expectations.
4. Provides programs to enhance staff skills and professional development and supports a culture of excellence.
5. Ensures that appropriate personnel policies, processes, guidelines, and accountability are in place that comply with federal, state and local laws and regulations.
6. Conducts periodic constituent and stakeholder satisfaction surveys to evaluate programs and services.

Board Development and Relations
1. Develops and nurtures an open, productive and respectful collaboration with the Boards of Directors.
2. Guides and supports the Boards of Directors in developing and facilitating the mission, vision, and strategic goals of the organizations.
3. Develops and maintains productive, open line of communication with the Boards, especially the presidents.
4. Responsible for development of annual reports and retention of appropriate documents.
5. Supports the Board presidents regarding:
a. Board operations designed to promote board effectiveness and efficiencies (e.g., communication, resources, staff support).
b. Development of Board education and development activities (e.g., retreat, in-services).
c. Works with the Boards to develop appropriate succession planning.
6. Serves as spokesperson for the enterprise to external audiences, per Board's request as appropriate.
7. Oversees development of grants, awards and scholarships as defined by the Boards.
8. In collaboration with respective Boards, periodically evaluates bylaws and policies and identifies recommendations for changes, as appropriate.

Professional Development
1. Maintains current knowledge and skills related to organizational leadership, the healthcare and hospice and palliative industry, certification, policy, and non-profit operations.
2. Participates in national organizations and committees.
3. Pursues own professional development in support of organizational and strategic initiatives.

1. Performs other duties as assigned by the Boards of HPNA, HPCC and HPNF.


1. RN license preferred.
2. CAE and other appropriate professional certifications preferred.
3. Master’s degree preferred in nursing or a related field.
4. Industry experience in palliative care or hospice preferred.
5. Experience in corporate, senior-level leadership roles, including fiscal management and strategic planning.
6. Proven track record of leading organizations toward industry visibility, constituent satisfaction, membership growth, and a strong financial position.
7. Experience in oversight of fund development and corporate philanthropic initiatives to meet financial goals.
8. Demonstrated ability to establish, maintain, and propagate effective working relationships and partnerships with peers and national stakeholders/leaders.
9. Experience in working with boards of directors/trustees in non-profit settings.
