Jewish Family Service of Colorado (JFS) believes in strengthening the community by providing vital services to people in need. Every day, JFS helps people overcome life’s challenges to live fuller, more meaningful lives. Founded in 1872, JFS is a nonsectarian, nonprofit human services agency serving metro Denver and Boulder. JFS helps seniors maintain a high quality of life; provides quality mental health counseling to children and adults, including refugees; offers training and job placement to people with significant barriers to employment; provides food and financial aid to individuals and families in crisis; and works with clients to prevent homelessness. Every year, the agency benefits more than 22,000 people of all faiths, races, ages, incomes, and abilities.

JFS Colorado offers 30 programs and wraparound services through Mental Health Services, Senior Services, Volunteer Services, Family Safety Net Services, Chaplaincy Services, Disability and Employment Services; has an executive staff of 12; an operating budget of $12M; and assets of over $18M.

The Position

The board of JFS Colorado seeks a seasoned CEO with demonstrated experience in fundraising and relationship building as well as a passion for human services to set and drive the tone of the organization.  The candidate will also have a primary responsibility for managing, guiding, integrating and developing a deeply talented professional team and to implement the newly developed strategic plan. The implementation of the strategic plan positions JFS Colorado to best provide the talent, financial, operations and technological upgrades to effectively advance the organizational work. In addition, a primary focus of the work of the new CEO will be to engage the board, staff, and donors in the implementation process outlined in this plan and beyond.

Leadership & Executive Management

  • Passionately lead human services agency
  • Build consensus and foster collaboration at all levels
  • Empower staff to maximize productivity, ensure professional excellence, and promote teamwork
  • Ensure that human resources, data platforms and technology systems are aligned to meet goals and expectations effectively
  • Lead change while understanding and respecting organizational culture and history
  • Drive innovation and multi-generational messaging
  • Create process and enhance infrastructure for growth
  • Regularly evaluate the management and status of all financial resources and procedures
  • Act as face, heart, and soul of the agency by effectively communicating mission and vision
  • Stay current on trends in health and human services sectors

Institutional Advancement

  • Develop and drive a strong and innovative institutional advancement plan capitalizing on the current and rapid community growth
  • Serve as primary spokesperson representing JFS Colorado in the broader Denver community and national Jewish community
  • Build relationships with community partners, including government agencies
  • Lead in designing and implementing fundraising activities, including stewardship, cultivation, and direct fund solicitation
  • Be personally active in building relationships with major donors and soliciting these major contributors to the annual campaign, designated campaign, and endowment fund
  • Identify and connect with new and potential donors. Work with development staff and Board of Directors to motivate both lay leaders and professionals in their fundraising efforts and to develop effective strategies to increase funds received, including major gifts from key individuals, foundations, and corporate donors, as well as government grants
  • Oversee the work of the development team to establish and implement structure and strong data driven systems for data tracking, data analysis and prospect research of donors. Guide JFS Colorado to respond to, thrive, and understand the shifts and real-time demographics within the world of charitable giving
  • Particular emphasis should be placed on creatively diversifying funding. Craft and sell a compelling organizational vision in accordance with and animating the current strategic plan

Financial Oversight

  • Work closely with the volunteer leadership and staff responsible for finance and administration, ensuring that fiscal oversight and management are in place
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility, stability, forecasting, and accountability to control costs and increase revenue
  • Possess keen analytical skills, budget and business acumen to closely monitor financial status and ensure sound financial control
  • Grow foundation and corporate grants
  • Pair metrics of finances with program outcomes
  • Implement and stay current on optimal practices in non-profit management as well as business, legislative and economic trends that could affect operations
  • Understand and evaluate the financial impact of ongoing programs and new initiatives
  • Ensure that financial planning and oversight protects and grows agency assets

Board Development

  • Develop bench of leadership for board
  • Sharpen expectations for board members
  • Deepen and diversify the roles of board members
