Chief Financial Officer

Background

BronxWorks helps individuals and families improve their economic and social well-being. From toddlers to seniors, they feed, shelter, teach, and support their neighbors to build a stronger community. Today, with an agency budget of close to $80 million, more than 850 employees serve over 45,000 Bronx residents a year from 37 locations across the South Bronx. Services (some borough-wide) include: benefits assistance; programs for children, youth, families, and seniors; immigration services; workforce development; HIV/AIDS and other chronic illness programs; health and wellness promotion; homeless services; and eviction prevention.

Position

BronxWorks is looking to a hire an experienced Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”) to be an integral part of the executive management team and lead the overall fiscal planning and oversight of this large, complex, social services not-for-profit. The CFO will report to the Executive Director and work in collaboration with the ED, Board of Directors and the senior management team to ensure the integrity of the financials and systems within BronxWorks.

The CFO is responsible for and oversees budget development, all financial management, and compliance surrounding BronxWorks government contracts. S/he will manage an 18-member financial department.  Working closely with the Executive Director, the CFO must be strategic in assessing business risks and opportunities while ensuring that there is an ample amount of cash flow coverage.

The CFO will be a strong communicator with the ability to liaise with a variety of funders, government representatives, staff, bankers, and vendors, as well as develop strong relationships internally with the executive team and the program directors.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the day-to-day operations of the BronxWorks finance function and provide direction and supervision to the finance team engaged in day-to-day internal accounting and cash management.
  • Represent BronxWorks on matters of advocacy as they pertain to funding issues, budget cuts, programs, and audit compliance issues.
  • Effectively maintain internal controls to safeguard the agency’s assets, regularly reviewing and recommending modifications to strengthen them.
  • Coach and mentor the staff of accounting professionals, providing leadership and guidance to achieve a high level of operational excellence.
  • Through direct reports of the Controller, Director of Grants and Contracts, and Purchasing Manager, oversee management of the general ledger, all financial activity with respect to grants and contracts, audits, payroll, and purchase processing.
  • Partner with Human Resources on matters pertaining to payroll processing and various audits of personnel. 
  • Work with outside auditors to prepare BronxWorks' 990 as well as all other audited financials.
  • Help formulate BronxWorks' annual budget and present it to the Board.
  • Coordinate with the Controller regarding the preparation, review and presentation of BronxWorks' quarterly financial reports to the Executive Director and the Board.
  • Work with the Director of Grants and Contracts to review, sign, and submit monthly, quarterly, and bi-annual reports to funders.
  • Work with the Development team to reconcile grant funding results and fundraising initiatives.
  • Work closely with the General Counsel to ensure accurate integration of new contracts and financial agreements into accounting operations.
  • Create a dashboard to track and discuss BronxWorks' cash flow needs with the Executive Director.
  • Liaise with funding sources, government agencies, bankers, various program directors, and external accounting firms.
  • Work with the Executive Director on BronxWorks' strategic plan and other special projects.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience as a CFO in a large and highly complex organization.
  • High level of competence and professional stature to advise CEO and Board Committees on effective financial management.
  • Experience in a supervisory role managing multiple staff and fostering a culture of transparency and teamwork.
  • A demonstrated ability to think strategically in seeing opportunities, assessing risks, streamlining systems, and reducing expenses.
  • Experience managing organizations funded by multiple government contracts, preferably through New York City and New York State agencies.
  • Highly effective in oral and written communication.
  • Knowledge of accounting systems and the ability to lead the implementation of a new system throughout the organization.
  • Ability to gain the trust of others and foster collaborative relationships.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in accounting or CPA preferred.
