Director of Development

SUMMARY:

Huntington Medical Research Institutes is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving lives through biomedical research. Our brand-new state of the art laboratory anchors the biomedical corridor on Fair Oaks in Pasadena. Our scientists' research focus on the connection between the brain and heart, developing diagnostic tools to help treat common diseases of these vital organs that affect every family.

The Director of Development is an essential part of HMRI, providing leadership in the fundraising activities of the organization. HMRI seeks a dynamic individual who will be responsible for all fundraising and development activities, ensuring they are consistent with the organization’s mission and strategic plan, for the creation, development and implementation of an annual comprehensive fund development plan that incorporates individual, major gift, corporate/foundation solicitations and special events, and engages key organizational stakeholders in activities that increase the financial resources and support to the organization.

Under the supervision of the Vice President of Operations and Development Officer, and in partnership with the CEO and Board of Directors, the Director of Development is responsible for expanding and diversifying the donor base. The successful candidate will help steward new relationships to build HMRI’s financial resources and community impact; develop a revenue growth plan that includes building a major gift program and planned giving program, works directly and indirectly with current and potential donors, and is responsible for all aspects of fund development from researching funding opportunities, writing and submitting appropriate proposals and grants, building major donor base, and executing successful stewardship events.

The successful candidate is a proven fundraiser, compelling storyteller, and communicator. The Director of Development must be able to communicate HMRI’s mission in compelling ways to donors, supporters and other key influencers; and be able to quickly translate medical research information for a wide range of audiences.

The ideal candidate will be entrepreneurial, innovative, a critical thinker, a leader, action-oriented, and goal driven.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with relevant major coursework;
  • Experienced professional with a minimum of 7 years demonstrated successful fundraising, particularly in annual and major gifts preferably in a medical setting;
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles and techniques, and successful experience in board and volunteer management;
  • Previous experience using Raiser’s Edge software;
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certificate preferred;
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues and prospects, building respect, consensus and trust across reporting lines;
  • Experience in management of professional and support staff;
  • Knowledge of the community a plus;
  • Provide leadership and support in the development and execution of a comprehensive fundraising plan that includes all aspects of volunteer and donor development (identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship);
  • Establish and cultivate partnership relationships in alignment with other institutional funders and collaborators in order to secure corporate, foundation, and other organizational contributions;
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with key community leaders/groups, stakeholders, and elected officials for recruitment as volunteers, advocates, and ambassadors;
  • Demonstrated results in securing, activating, and managing sponsorship, donor, or other corporate partner relationships;
  • Proven track record of developing and closing new charitable contributions, meeting and exceeding revenue goals, and measuring outcomes;
  • Strong verbal and written presentation skills, including the ability to tell compelling stories and deliver persuasive presentations; and
  • The Director of Development also performs a wide range of job duties as assigned and requested.
