Director of Development - Red Sox Foundation

The Director of Development (DOD) will be responsible for securing new sources of income from individuals, foundations, and corporations, as well as assisting the Red Sox Foundation (RSF) in expanding and maintaining its current donor base. Working with the Executive Director (ED) and other key organizational staff, the Director of Development will also be responsible for creating a strategic fundraising plan that will ensure sustainable program and partner funding for the RSF.

RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Provide the leadership, strategic direction, management and coordination for all aspects of the program’s fundraising efforts
    • Prepare the annual fundraising plan in collaboration with the Executive Director for presentation to the Board of Directors along with detailed reports about the fundraising progress throughout the fiscal year
    • Implement fundraising strategies that increase the organization’s support from individuals, corporations, foundations, sponsors and other sources, with a special emphasis on sales and developing sponsorships
    • Lead and manage the RSF’s overall development efforts; oversee the distribution of a large portion of those funds to key partners
    • Write and execute all funding proposals and grants, Letters of Interest and reports in support of our programming; maintaining regular correspondence with foundations, donors, and board members with a long-term relationship approach; overseeing all mailings
    • Oversee and execute the multiple and critical fundraising events for the RSF; assess ability to improve the ROI
    • Assist with creation and management of Foundation budget
    • Diversify the revenue portfolio of the Foundation to ensure sustainability
    • Manage the Charitable Giving arm of the Foundation; create and oversee the evaluation and measurement of those donations to ensure maximum impact
    • Build strong relationships with the RSF’s program staff; understand all programs and partnerships thoroughly; work collaboratively with program staff to integrate innovative development strategies
    • Work effectively with the ED to enhance board members’ engagement and support
    • Ensure that appropriate systems, people and procedures are in place to support the program’s future fundraising goals
    • Cultivate, solicit and secure “major donors” (5-figure gifts and above) and sponsorships, including annual and multi-year gifts.

CHARACTERISTICS/QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor's degree, (Master's degree preferred)
    • Demonstrated experience in managing people and budgets
    • A record of measurable results in organizing and implementing such campaigns as: major gifts, sponsorship proposals, grant writing, annual funds, corporate and foundation giving, fundraising events, and grant management
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and quickly gain the respect and support of various constituencies, including board and staff members, donors, foundation and civic leaders; experience recruiting and organizing volunteers
    • Solid understanding of nonprofit fiscal management, principles and best practices
    • Track record as an effective communicator and sales specialist; highly developed skills in writing and speaking; competence at crafting proposals, donor correspondence and other kinds of materials; receptive and responsive to feedback; the ability to communicate the program’s mission and interests to a broad audience;
    • Passion for philanthropy and nonprofit work
    • Organized; ability to multi-task; detail oriented
    • Works well under pressure to meet deadlines
    • Familiarity with the major donor community in Boston and New England
    • Able to work nights, weekends and holidays as required based on game and event schedule
