Building on the strong history of service and service learning at St. John Fisher College, the Director will help establish and lead a new Institute for Civic and Community Engagement. With demonstrated leadership and communication skills the Director will advance and oversee the strategic development of community engagement work at the College. By intentionally and creatively interacting with constituents across campus and in the community, the Director will help build a culture committed to learning through service and to maximizing the impact of mutually reciprocal partnerships. In collaboration with the Provost’s Office and through partnerships with faculty and staff, the Director will seek to increase community-based research and broader community-based education experiences for faculty and students. The Director will develop and sustain partnerships, promote ongoing service opportunities, support faculty initiatives, and implement the campus Civic Action Plan through the support of the campus commitment to collective impact and anchor institution work.

Job Responsibilities

• Help establish and provide executive leadership to the Institute for Civic and Community Engagement through long-range, strategic planning.
• Facilitate the development of a multi-year strategy for the Institute that responds to the current and emerging needs of the Greater Rochester region; addresses institutional priorities; reflects best practices in the field; and helps define Fisher’s role as an “anchor institution.”
• Develop a “platform partnership” with Connected Communities that includes working with community- and faith-based organizations in the EMMA Beechwood neighborhood. 
• Oversee budgets and budget planning for the Institute, devise fiscal management strategies, and contribute to fundraising efforts to ensure College resources are aligned to support the institution’s role as an anchor institution. 
• Supervise two-three direct reports, and oversee the College’s service-related scholarships.
• Design and oversee the use assessment tools that track, monitor, and oversee College-wide civic and community engagement work.
• Advance relationships between the College and community-based organizations, as well as with government, health care, and other higher education institutions throughout Rochester, in partnership with the Associate Vice President of Community Engagement. 
• Work collaboratively with the Center for Community Engagement, as well as with other divisions of the College and student clubs and organizations.
• With the Office of Multicultural Affairs and other relevant offices, create and implement a plan to increase the level of cultural intelligence, competency, and humility campus-wide, particularly for those students and faculty who engage directly with the larger community. 
• Establish and staff an advisory board of nonprofit and community leaders, as well as a faculty/staff advisory board, to help inform the Institute’s work. 
• Keep abreast of current research, emerging issues, and best practices in nonprofit innovation, service delivery, and governance, as well as anchor institution efforts; ensure that programming reflects those emerging issues/best practices.
• Carry out other duties as assigned by the Provost.

Education / Experience

• Master’s degree in related field required; doctoral degree preferred.
• 5-7 years of progressive leadership and supervisory experience in nonprofit, health care, or higher education program management.

• Experience in setting and achieving strategic objectives.
• Knowledge of and experience with community engagement, especially as it has developed in higher education and how it connects to anchor institution work. 
• Ability to build relationships and engage a wide range of diverse stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community leaders.
• Experience in leading cross-functional teams.
• Strong interpersonal, facilitation, and written and verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge of or experience with an institution with the Carnegie Classification of Community Engagement.
• Knowledge of the theory and best practices in service learning, civic/community engagement and partnerships, social justice issues, and student development with a demonstrated ability to apply theories in appropriate contexts.
• Demonstrated emotional intelligence and intercultural competence and the ability to work effectively in collaboration with those from different cultures.
• Ability to speak about the role partnerships play in delivering education.
• Strong organizational and project planning skills.
