Position Description

As a member of the philanthropy team, the Director of Institutional Giving supports the annual budget of the National Service Office for Nurse-Family Partnership and contributes to the success of the organization’s multi-year strategic and scaling plans.  The Director of Institutional Giving is responsible for maximizing institutional giving to the organization, including grants, corporate partnerships and sponsorships and cause-related marketing ventures.   This position is responsible for a portfolio of national and regional corporations and foundations and is expected to realize annual fundraising goals as established for the position.  The institutional giving team, under the leadership of the Director of Institutional Giving, also identifies and pursues public grant opportunities as appropriate.

This position reports to the Chief Philanthropy Officer and serves as a member of the leadership team for philanthropy.  The ideal candidate will be based in a major city in the Midwest or East. This position is a remote position. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

70%     Portfolio Management – Identify corporate and foundation prospects and develops effective strategies for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Develop a robust portfolio of institutional donors and personally maintain a portfolio of approximately 50-75 active donors and prospects. Signinficantly increase the number of institutional donors by making direct solicitations and securing gifts and grants of $100,000 plus. Pursue and realize corporate grants, sponsorships, cause-related marking or other ventures that maximize corporate partnerships in service to the organization, its mission and target audience.  Conduct donor and prospect visits for the purpose of discovery and deepen relationships with existing donors. Manage grants and partnerships strategically and according to commitments and requirements, including  tracking and meeting deadlines, monitoring payments, coordinating compliance with internal processes and guidelines, and stewarding effectively. Coordinate and implement donor recognition. Engage other staff members and volunteers in fundraising efforts. Maintain donor records and track “moves management” in Customer Relations Management database.

20%     Coach and lead the Institutional Giving team to establish and ensure that giving from institutions is maximized, annual goals are achieved or exceeded, and individual staff members are supported toward successful performance and on-going professional development.  The Institutional Giving Team includes an Institutional Giving Manager and Philanthropy Writer.  

10%     Create gift opportunities and corresponding budgets with internal and external partners to reflect organizational priorities and fundraising opportunities. Translate needs into compelling cases for support. Build a culture of philanthropy through engagement and interaction of colleagues and volunteers in fundraising activities.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Director of Institutional Giving currently has two direct reports.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
  • Minimum of seven years of successful fundraising at the major gift level
  • Demonstrated leadership in cultivating, soliciting and stewarding significant foundation gifts/grants and pursing strategic corporate partnerships that include a finanancial component
  • Minimum of five years of management experience and demonstrated ability to build and lead an effective and coordinated fundraising team and effort
  • Ability to develop and execute donor-centric fundraising and relationship management strategies
  • Ability to generate solid fundraising forecasts, track activity toward goals and analyze and report on performance
  • Experience with grants management and prospect research
  • Experience managing and monitoring expenses, as well as creating budgets that align with needs
  • Knowledge of relevant foundations and corporations desired
  • Capacity to flourish within a complex and changing organization
  • Capability to think strategically and creatively while executing tactically
  • Ability to make decisions independently yet execute collaboratively  
  • Experience working closely with and staffing internal and external stakeholders, including senior staff members, volunteers and partners
  • Excellent communication skills through the use of strong and persuasive verbal and written communication and ability to build and articulate a compelling case(s) for support
  • Understanding of industry best practices and demonstrated ethical compliance as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite of products and working knowledge of Customer Relations Management database, preferablySalesforce

  • Willingness to work flexible hours
  • Ability to readily travel and willingness to travel 20 percent of the time
