Director of the Foundation

Background

Founded nearly 80 years ago, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation (“Federation”) mobilizes human and financial resources to care for those in need, strengthen Jewish life, and advance the unity, values and shared purpose of the Jewish people. Miami is one of the largest Jewish communities in the country and is culturally, geographically and demographically one of the most diverse Jewish populations in the U.S. The Federation is the central address of the Miami Jewish community, convening community members who envision, plan, and raise funds for a strong and vibrant Jewish future.

Over 50 years ago, the Federation established a Foundation to serve philanthropists interested in solving community challenges through planned and legacy gifts. Today, the Foundation manages assets of more than $330 million housed in 700+ funds. It is charged with developing the resources necessary to address the future opportunities and challenges of the Miami Jewish community. Allocations and grants from The Foundation funds critical programs in Miami, Israel and around the world. This past year more than $34 million was allocated from The Foundation to these programs and the agencies that provide them.

Position

Working with the Chief Development Officer and volunteer leadership, the Foundation Director is the senior executive responsible for leading efforts to achieve the overall endowment, planned giving, and multi-generational philanthropy objectives for the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. The Director leads a team of professionals in all areas of planned giving and endowment, donor advised funds, supporting organizations and donor relations and stewardship, while coordinating lay and staff resources to meet or exceed established goals and objectives within the Foundation arena and within Federation as a whole.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as lead professional in growing the Foundation’s assets, including unrestricted, field of interest, Agency and Donor Advised Funds
  • Develop effective strategies in partnership with key lay leaders for cultivating, soliciting and stewarding prospects
  • Advocate and champion for the Foundation within the Federation and the community
  • Manage and direct all development aspects related to Foundation, including:
    • Philanthropic Funds, Life Income Plans, Designated Funds
    • Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment Funds (PACE)
    • Lion of Judah Endowments (LOJE)
    • Supporting Foundations
    • Professional Advisors Council
    • Agency/Congregation Funds housed in the Foundation
    • Create a Jewish Legacy
    • Life Insurance Program
    • Golden Care
  • Provide professional support to lay leadership to identify, initiate, and develop solicitation efforts, enhance current initiatives and implement fundraising activities
  • Develop and maintains Foundation department budget
  • Serve as a key member of the development department’s strategy team

Qualifications

  • 5-10 years of related experience in planned giving, endowment fundraising and foundation and fund management
  • Successful track record with personal solicitation 
  • Experience in the areas of accounting, business structures, and strategic planning 
  • Strong interpersonal, relationship building, and leadership skills to interact with a diverse body of lay and professional leaders 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Ability to think strategically and guide others in a strategic planning process   
  • Significant knowledge of charitable gift planning techniques
  • Understanding of the law, especially as it relates to gift planning, foundations and endowments, and non-profit management.
  • Experience working in partnership with nonprofit board members
  • Knowledge of the organized Jewish community, its practices, and values
  • Bachelors degree required; advanced degree (JD, MBA, CPA or CFP) preferred
