Executive Director, Advancement

The Executive Director, Advancement leads a team of professional major gift officers responsible for raising major and principal gifts in support of the campaign. The Executive Director must bring creativity and entrepreneurial skills to identify new high-end prospects and develop strategies to proactively cultivate and solicit prospects to generate major and principal gifts.

Responsibilities and Outcomes Expected

Major Gift Development

  • Under the direction of the Chief Development Officer (CDO), will develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising campaign plan for the school, focusing on major gifts.
  • Work with the CDO to establish annual fundraising goals.  Develop, implement, monitor and assess strategies to achieve goals.
  • Participate in strategic planning, write narrative justifications in support of the fundraising master plan and identify resources needed to support it.
  • Define major gift goals, objectives, and metrics.
  • Lead the major gifts fundraising effort for the school ensuring compliance with university fundraising policies, goals, and procedures.
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement fundraising strategies to secure major gifts in the $100K-$5 million range.  Develop, prepare and present formal fundraising proposals to major gift prospects.  
  • Carry and manage a portfolio of gift prospects.
  • Work closely with the CDO to identify, research, and set strategies for new principal gift prospects.
  • Ensure an effective stewardship plan for donors that is functional, systematically implemented and uses university best practices. 
  • Working with the Chief Managing Officer for Advancement Services, coordinate development research, data integrity and prospect management.  Build a large prospect base while engaging with prospects through visits and events, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction to volunteers who assist in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation, stewardship of major prospects.
  • Manage expenses for the major gift area.
  • Represent the USC Viterbi Advancement team as requested by the CDO.

Major Gift Development Personnel

  • Supervise and manage major gift staff and monitor progress against annual goals and objectives.
  • Manage hiring, training and performance assessment for the major gift group.

Position Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experienced senior fundraising professional with a demonstrated track record of fundraising success, organizational leadership, strategic planning, and budget management.
  • Proven success at management and stewardship. 
  • Demonstrated project, personnel, and volunteer management experience.
  • Highly motivated professional with solid success at achieving or surpassing ambitious fundraising targets.
  • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking and fundraising proposal writing.
  • Ability to develop and implement creative prospect and donor solicitation strategies.
  • Bachelor’s Degree with minimum of 7 years experience required, preferred 10 years experience and Master’s degree.
  • Expertise in major campaign fundraising and volunteer management, preferably at a complex research university.
