Job Description

The Executive Director oversees all aspects of Aspen Public Radio’s operations, making certain that APR achieves its financial objectives, while ensuring that effective execution of its long-range operating strategy enables APR to operate at the forefront of innovation and relevance in public media. Additionally, the Executive Director will serve as APR’s primary spokesperson and lead fundraiser, while taking a leadership role within major national public media entities and on state and national policy and funding issues relative to public media.

Major Responsibilities

Hire, manage, assess, promote, retain and lead APR’s staff, maintaining a top tier, closely knit team that creates and delivers quality programming throughout the Roaring Fork Valley on all formats that can attract a significant listenership. Provide strong operational leadership to the team at APR by affirming existing processes and measures, setting clear priorities and accomplishing stretch objectives through teamwork, collaboration and systems of accountability.

Expand the membership base with new programming and new formats in accordance with the station’s strategic plan and within a sustainable board-approved budget.

Be a forceful and effective fundraiser with the ability to lead a multimillion dollar capital campaign, in addition to cultivating prospects for annual and planned gifts.

Communicate a clear vision for APR to employees, the board, partners and other constituents, enhancing APR’s credibility with all key stakeholders, the public media industry at large, as well as the communities APR serves.

Build upon the existing environment of innovation; continue to support and encourage open communication, creativity, and imagination while engendering a team spirit in solving problems and optimizing new business opportunities.

Be actively engaged in partnering with the Governance Committee and the Chair of the Board to advise on Board leadership and to provide administrative support to the board, and working to draw the best out of each director.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree or equivalent. A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in management, preferably in public media, including leadership and effective management of staff.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, Business, or Non-profit Management. Demonstrable experience and judgement with news and cultural content, fundraising, and nonprofit boards. An inspirational, visionary, and forward-thinking leader able to adapt quickly to new media trends and technology.
