The Colorado Association of Health Plans is the trade association of health insurance carriers in Colorado and represents the industry before the Legislature, regulatory agencies, and partners with the community.

Founded in 1986, the Colorado Association of Health Plans (CAHP) supports the growth and development of health-delivery systems in their efforts to provide access to high-quality, cost-effective health care to the citizens of Colorado.


The Opportunity:

The Executive Director is responsible for executing the mission and strategic plan of the Colorado Association of Health Plans, whose members provide insurance benefits to over four million Coloradans.  This position provides an exciting opportunity to work in the center of Colorado’s dynamic healthcare environment. 

The Executive Director is responsible for representing the health insurance industry in numerous public settings, including in front of the Colorado Legislature, Division of Insurance, and Governor’s Office.  The Executive Director will work with CAHP’s Board of Directors to develop strategy and programs needed to support and advance the industry’s business, policy, and regulatory objectives.  The Executive Director is expected to foster and maintain relationships with key public and private leaders. 

The Executive Director will report directly to CAHP’s Board of Directors, which is comprised of health insurance CEOs and government affairs directors.  The Executive Director will also manage CAHP staff and contractors.  The role requires effective leadership, communication, and public speaking skills, as well as the self-motivation needed to work independently in advancing CAHP’s interest each day. 



Association Management

·Board of Directors

o   Scheduling and developing Board agendas

o   Executing Board directives and strategies

o   Advising the Board on matters critical to CAHP

o   Facilitating Board interaction with key public and private officials

·Financial Oversight

o   Developing and managing CAHP’s budget

o   Working with the CAHP’s accountant to establish financial best practices

o   Developing strategies to grow CAHP membership and revenue

·Staff Oversight

o   Make personnel and compensation decisions for all CAHP staff and contractors

o   Develop professional growth opportunities for staff and handle all human resource issues for staff

o   Advise Board on staffing and compensation needs necessary to execute Board directives and strategies


External Relations

·Public Sector

o   Represent the industry with standing with key public officials

o   Develop and maintain relationships with the Governor’s Office and affiliated administration officials, especially the Insurance Commissioner at the CO DOI

o   Develop relationships with legislative leadership and represent the industry in legislative settings as needed

·Private Sector

o   Represent the industry with standing with key business and healthcare groups

o   Maintain an equal presence as counterparts representing hospitals and providers

o   Serve as the face of the health insurance industry in various stakeholder meetings, commissions, and task forces

o   Develop engagement strategies to align CAHP with effective partners in order to influence public policy outcomes


Public Relations


o   Develop and maintain effective relationships with key media members

o   Facilitate media interaction on behalf of CAHP


o   Develop proactive messaging campaigns needed to achieve CAHP’s directives and strategies

Job Requirements



·Minimum seven years of legislative, regulatory, political, and government affairs experience

·Healthcare industry experience

·Trade association or membership organization experience


·Ability to travel to out of state conferences two to three times a year
