Executive Director

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION IN THE CARIBBEAN (EPIC)

Environmental Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC) is seeking an Executive Director (ED) with a passion for conservation to lead our non-profit organization in its mission to protect the Caribbean environment through research, outreach, and community-based action. Registered as an U.S.-based 501c3 organization in 2001, EPIC has worked throughout the Antilles in collaboration with local partners to address crucial conservation issues.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for EPIC’s staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission. The ED will initially develop a deep knowledge of field, core programs, operations, and business plans.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Management:

  • Responsible for leading EPIC in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
  • Supports a strong Board of Directors; seeks and builds board involvement with a strategic direction for operations. Serve as liaison between staff and Board. Submits a monthly written report on organizational activities to the Board.
  • Ensures ongoing local programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; establish timelines, policies, and resources needed to achieve our strategic goals and mission.
  • Actively engages and energizes staff, volunteers, board members, event committees, partnering organizations, and funders.
  • Leads, develops, hires, and releases Program and Project Managers and Associates.
  • Signs notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization in agreement with the Board.

Administration & Finance

  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of EPIC, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget, fundraising strategy and targets, and quarterly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition and strategic direction of the organization.
  • Responsible for fiscal management that anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.
  • Maintains official records and documents, and ensures compliance with government regulations.
  • Ensures effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluates program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents.

Fundraising

  • Expands revenue generating and fundraising activities for core costs, existing program operations, and projected program expansions in support of EPIC’s mission.
  • Identifies, cultivates, and solicits major and planned gifts, contributions, and relationships with foundations, corporations and the business sector, state funding agencies, individuals and community organizations.
  • Leads and coordinates with EPIC’s Board and staff on the preparation of funding proposals.

Communications

  • Supervises diverse communication mediums including EPIC’s website and social media management, promoting EPIC through conferences, peer to peer networking, and a quarterly newsletter with the goal of creating a stronger brand and network of support.
  • Serves as primary spokesperson and promoter for EPIC’s program to its stakeholders, the media, and the general public.

Planning & New Business

  • Leads the development and implementation of the strategic operational plan and budget for current and future programs and projects.
  • Builds partnerships with new stakeholders in new markets, establishing and developing relationships with funders, and political and community leaders.

Qualifications

The ED will be thoroughly committed to EPIC’s mission. All candidates should have proven leadership and relationship management experience.

Core requirements include:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree, preferably a Master of Business Administration, with at least five years of senior management experience; track record of effectively leading and regionally and/or internationally scaling a performance- and outcomes-based organization and staff; ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
  • Experience in data-driven program evaluation
  • Organizational management experience with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams and to set and achieve strategic objectives.
  • Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors and the ability to cultivate board member relationships
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
  • Familiarity with diverse Caribbean cultures
  • Knowledge of Caribbean conservation issues

Compensation commensurate with achievements and experience. Location for base of operations is flexible.
