Executive Director

SPARC is seeking an Executive Director to join our team.  Our Executive Director has the overall strategic and operational responsibility of the organization including establishing long range goals, ensuring financial responsibility, developing employee talent, promoting community relationships, and strengthening public relations. The Executive Director will be a strategic, visionary, and collaborative leader, guiding the organization in the achievement of its mission and serving as a leader in the community.

Our mission is to provide, inspire and support children and their families in our community who are in need of educational or therapeutic programs. We serve children with special needs, birth to five years of age. SPARC offers opportunities for family education, participation and support so that families may become more knowledgeable about their child’s needs and goals and are better able to participate in enhancing their child’s development. Whenever possible, children with special needs participate in programs with other children in the community. SPARC strives to help children and families meet their unique challenges and participate fully in their community.

SPARC was established in 1964 by parents of children with severe disabilities with no available school experience.  SPARC has always tried to focus on meeting the needs of an expanding community and has changed and grown to meet those needs. SPARC serves over two hundred children and families each year. SPARC is located in the scenic Skagit valley.  Our main office is located in Mount Vernon, easily accessible from Interstate 5.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Leadership and Staff Development:      

  • Assure that the organization has a long-range strategy which achieves it mission and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.
  • Develop goals, objectives, and operational plans for the organization that ensure ongoing excellence in our programs, our staffing, finance, administration, fundraising and communications.
  • Actively support an environment and programs to successfully recruit, employ, and retain a diverse staff of top quality talent.
  • Lead and work collaboratively with SPARC’s leadership team and develop future leadership in the program.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field and relevant political landscape.
  • Fully inform the Board on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it.

Financial Responsibility, Operation & Governance:

  • Develop yearly budget, monitor and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Oversees the fiscal activities of the organization including budgeting, reporting audit and other guidelines according to laws and regulations.
  • Ensure fund development strategies are developed, cultivated, and implemented that provide the necessary financial resources to sustain and grow the organization.

Community Involvement and Fundraising:

  • Serve as chief spokesperson for SPARC, assuring proper representation and reputation in the community.
  • Expand local revenue generating and fundraising activities to support program operations and growth
  • Build and maintain relationships with donors, elected officials, community leaders, and leaders in the field of practice.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree
  • Five years of experience in  a non-profit management position
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, and communication skills; ability to adapt and successfully lead an organization with a strong existing culture.
  • Familiarity of early childhood and special education  fields

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Annual salary range $65,000-$75,000 (Based on a 36 hour work week)
    • Typical work week is Monday-Thursday with occasional Firday obligations
  • Three weeks paid time off at scheduled school breaks
  • Two weeks paid time off during July/August.
