POSITION PROFILE

TITLE:  Executive Director 

REPORTS TO: Board of Directors   

POSITION:  Exempt/Full Time 

Veteran’s Life Center located in Butner, North Carolina (a short commute from Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina), seeks a visionary, passionate, innovative Executive Director with proven nonprofit leadership and management skills; experience in developing and expanding nonprofit organizations; demonstrated experience working with an engaged and dedicated Board of Directors; experience in and a passion for veteran, housing and/or homelessness programs; experience building state and local relationships to sustain collaborations, partnerships and funders; and demonstrated cross cultural competencies.

The mission of Veterans Life Center of NC is to improve the lives of 21st Century North Carolina veterans who are experiencing reintegration problems by providing temporary housing and services with the goal of achieving self-reliance in two years or less.

PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing strategic planning and operation of the Center in support of organizational mission and goals.  The Executive Director provides leadership and support to the Board of Directors in attaining and allocating resources and establishing program development, oversight and evaluation.  The Executive Director provides leadership and direction to staff in carrying out the key roles assigned to them. 

Position Summary:  The Executive Director is responsible for working with the Board of Directors to maintain an effective organizational structure and necessary operational capacity to ensure the success of all Center functions.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, ensuring that all programs are delivered and evaluated in keeping with best practices, emerging research and community opportunities, and potential innovations; expanding the agency’s influence within the larger community; hiring, training and evaluating staff; and managing the agency budget; coordinating meetings with the Board of Directors, attending all regular meetings of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors, and ensuring compliance with pertinent laws and regulations.

 

KEY ROLES: 

Board Governance

Works with board to fulfill the  organization’s mission

    • Responsible for leading VLC in a manner that supports and guides the organization's mission as defined by the Board of Directors
    • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions

Financial Performance and Viability

Develops resources to ensure the financial health of the organization

    • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of VLC, to include submission to the Board of Directors a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization
    • Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position
    • Works closely with Director of Legislative Programs and Veterans Advocacy in charge of fundraising and developing other resources necessary to support VLC’s mission

 

Organization Mission and Strategy

Works with board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community outreach.

  • Responsible for implementation of VLC' s programs that carry out the organization's mission
    • Responsible for strategic planning to ensure that VLC can successfully fulfill its mission into the future
    • Responsible for the enhancement of VLC's image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with partnering non- profits, federal agencies, civic and state entities

Operations

 Oversees and implements appropriate resources to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the organization

    • Responsible for effective administration of VLC operations
    • Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff
    • Responsible for executing contracts and agreements required to effectively fulfill the VLC mission
    • Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization

 

Professional Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree or higher
    • Transparent and high-integrity leadership
    • Three or more years executive nonprofit management experience – military service a plus
    • Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting
    • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation
    • Ability to convey a vision of VLC's strategic future to staff, board, volunteers and donors
    • Strong contract administration skills and experience
    • Skills to collaborate with and motivate board members and other volunteers
    • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff
  • Strong public speaking ability

Job Responsibilities:

  • Planning and operation of annual budget
  • Developing an action plan for the VLC that incorporates staff, contractors, and volunteer resources necessary to effectively and safely execute the mission
  • Establishing employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of VLC
  • Serving as VLC’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media and the public
  • Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations throughout the state and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance VLC’s mission
  • Report to and work closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising and to increase the visibility of the Center throughout the state
  • Supervise, collaborate with organization staff and contractors
  • Strategic planning and implementation
  • Attend all Board and committee meetings
  • Oversee marketing and other communications efforts not handled by the Director of Legislative Programs and Veterans Advocacy 
  • Review and approve contracts for services
  • Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors
