Position Summary
Woodley House seeks a dynamic Executive Director to extend a track record of success in supporting individuals living with chronic mental illness through residential and support services.  The new Executive Director will build on Woodley House’s 60-year history in the District of Columbia and work to increase the visibility and impact of this vital community resource.
Reporting to the Board of Directors and managing a staff of 40, the Executive Director will have the overall responsibility of assuring that the vision and mission of Woodley House are met. Additionally, s/he will manage Woodley House’s diverse programs, ensure financial sustainability, lead a highly dedicated team, build strong partnerships, and engage a diverse group of key stakeholders.
The ideal candidate is a highly passionate and entrepreneurial leader and communicator with experience effectively leading an organization, initiative, or department. Further, the candidate must be a proven fundraiser, program leader and team builder, and possesses a deep commitment to the mission of Woodley House.
Key Responsibilities:
   Strategic Leadership 

  • Lead Woodley House’s strategic direction; collaborate with Board, staff, and key stakeholders to set clear data-driven goals to further Woodley House’s mission
  • Oversee the development and execution of strategic organizational priorities, ensuring short-term and long-term stability, and necessary infrastructure is in place to realize the continued development and growth of Woodley House

   Financial and Operational Management

  • Oversee the successful execution of Woodley House’s day-to-day operations, including effective strategic financial decision-making and management, reporting, and compliance
  • Maintain and strengthen the financial and operational integrity of the organization, proactively implementing best practices
  • Manage existing funder relationships and implement expanded funding strategies that generate new revenue from diverse sources to ensure organizational sustainability
  • Support the development of the annual budget and oversee the review and approval process with Board of Directors, managing the organization’s resources within approved budget guidelines
  • Ensure all Federal and District tax and other legal and regulatory forms are filed and compliant

   Program Leadership

  • Oversee the implementation and continued improvement of Woodley House’s residential and support programs, ensuring that they produce meaningful outcomes that adhere to best practices and are financially sustainable

   Relationship Management and Community Outreach

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including Woodley House’s clients, funders, community partners, and relevant local government agencies
  • Serve as Woodley House’s primary spokesperson, promoting and elevating the work of the organization with local government officials, peer organizations and the non-governmental funding community
  • Act as a thought leader, identifying and showcasing best practices in the field 

   Team Leadership

  • Acting as coach and mentor, lead and inspire staff to perform at their best
  • Optimize the performance management process including annual performance reviews 

   Board Engagement

  • Communicate and collaborate with the Board of Directors, maintaining active engagement and dialogue on all critical administrative and operational issues relating to the effective leadership of the organization



  • At least 5 years of leadership experience and Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Business Administration, Mental Health, Public Health, or related field
  • Demonstrated commitment to Woodley House’s mission and demonstrated knowledge of the field of mental health support
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the strategic, financial, and operational needs of a community-based organization
  • A skilled leader with the ability to motivate, coach, and develop a staff and Board
  • Proven success developing and executing a fundraising strategy, including successfully stewarding and cultivating diverse funding relationships
  • Experience navigating relationships with local, state, and federal agencies
  • Proven ability to empower a diverse set of key stakeholders within the Woodley House community, including clients, partners, and funders
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Positive, engaging and inclusive leadership style
  • Experience with residential services preferred
