REPORTS TO: VP, Development & Marketing



As a part of the Development team, the GRANTS MANAGER helps raise an annual budget of over $3.5 million through corporate, foundation, and government entities. The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles’ (BBBSLA) grants portfolio ranges from $800,000 - $1,000,000 annually and supports general operations, mentorship program services, youth scholarships, and strategic program initiatives. The GRANTS MANAGER must have excellent writing skills and have a successful track record of securing grant funds in the non-profit sector. Strong writing is key to the success of this position and must be strategic, analytical, and data-informed.


As a part of managing the grants funding portfolio, the GRANTS MANAGER conducts research into prospects for new funding opportunities and maintains records and tracking of grant deliverables including all grant application processes from the point of cultivation to proposal submission, compliance, and reporting. The position works closely with the President & CEO, Finance and Program staff to ensure successful program design, grant writing, and budget development.

· Directly solicit grants from corporate foundations, private foundations and government entities to support BBBSLA’s general operations, programs, and special projects.

· Establish and maintain relationships with key funding partners.

· Research, write, proofread and submit high-quality letters of inquiry, proposals and reports for program and operating grants ranging from $2,500 to $1,000,000.

· Develop proposals and collateral for corporate funders. Cultivate, solicit and steward existing corporate sponsors/partners in order to maintain and maximize engagement and philanthropy.

· Maintain reports and budgets to track revenue goals & progress. Ensure VP, Development & Marketing is briefed on all aspects of progress, challenges and successes.

· Execute follow-up related to funded proposals, e.g. thank you letters, contracts or letters of agreement, report deadlines, grant information sheets, press releases, tax and progress reporting, etc.

· Draft letters and other correspondence for senior and executive leaders.

· Conduct prospect and program research to identify and analyze potential funding sources, deadlines and application requirements (sources include publications, Internet, agency staff and databases, grantmakers, and reports).

· Maintain complete, accurate and timely records of grants, letters, reports and other work products; including updating grant tracking systems in Excel, Raiser’s Edge, GiveEffect, and/or paper files.

· Work with Finance on the collection and analysis of budget information for cost applications as well as grant reports.

· Work with Programs team to understand programmatic goals, deliverables and analysis of outcomes for grant proposals to ensure compliance to grant requirements and accurate and timely reporting.

· Conduct donor cultivation including development of relationships with existing and potential funders and attend and host meetings, workshops, and site tours to engage donors, prospects and partners.

· Collaborate with the VP, Development & Marketing on creating annual corporate, foundation, and government grant revenue budgets for the agency.



· Develop a comprehensive calendar for all grants and prospective grants which includes preparation time, deadlines, submission dates, stewardship, deliverable report dates and renewal dates.

· Attention to Detail – executes projects with precision. Ensures compliance to grant and project requirements. Prioritizes accuracy in reporting and consistently delivers the highest quality work product.

· Resourcefulness – able to effectively utilize research, analytical, and problem-solving skills to find solutions and execute projects.

· Communication – Demonstrates exceptional oral and written communication skills that includes demonstrated expertise in writing comprehensive reports and policies; interpreting high-level research, strategic plans, and financial records; and developing reports and presentations for Board of Directors, management, outside parties, and the community at large;

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:


Education: Bachelor’s degree required.


Experience: A minimum 3-years of grant writing, preferably with a demonstrated focus on support for children charities and an understanding of California’s philanthropy market. Applicable life or work experience in the areas of financial analysis, partner management and/or project management required. Some experience managing corporate relations a plus. Working knowledge of non-profit fundraising principles and direct non-profit fundraising experience.


Skills: Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Solid analytical and organizational skills required. Ability to work proactively and independently to meet deadlines. Mastery of basic computer software, applications and functionality including Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and Internet. Raisers Edge and GiveEffect experience a plus!

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend and drive. Job requires frequent verbal and computer communication. Computer, telephone and fax use are frequently required..


Working Location: Location is based on a percentage of where work time is spent.

Indoors--80% Travel (local) – 20% - job requires periodic trips out-of-town /state


Hours and Benefits: Full-time Exempt position (40 hrs/week). Typical work schedule: Mon-Fri, 9am – 5:30pm, but occasional evening and weekend work required. Benefits include 21 days paid time off (PTO), medical, dental, Life, LTD and vision insurance. Eligible for 403(b) retirement plan immediately and 4% salary matching benefits after one year
