Interim Chief Executive Officer

THE COLLEGIATE CHURCHES OF NEW YORK

500 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY

Commensurate with experience

The Collegiate Churches of New York, arguably the oldest continuously run religious institution in New York City, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced leader to serve as an Interim Chief Executive Officer for the organization.  This individual will help facilitate and guide the Consistory as well as provide management oversight of the corporate entity during a transition period as the Collegiate Churches addresses the challenges around growth, financial support, and most of all, what is the ideal structure for the Collegiate Churches as it moves into the 21st Century.

Background:

The Collegiate Churches of New York, founded in 1628, is a single historic church with five Manhattan-based ministries: Fort Washington Collegiate Church, Marble Collegiate Church, Middle Collegiate Church, West End Collegiate Church, and Intersections International. Each ministry is unique in its approach and character yet together they foster an open and affirming environment grounded in progressive theology.

A Consistory, comprised of the elders and deacons of the five ministries, governs the Collegiate Churches of New York. The current officers include a president and vice president (two of the Senior Ministers); a chair and a vice chair (members of the Consistory); and the executive vice president and chief operating officer (a member of staff who also serves as corporate secretary). An Executive Committee comprised of the officers, Senior Ministers, and the local consistory chairs of the five (5) ministries functions on behalf of the full Consistory between meetings of the latter.

Collegiate Asset Management (CAM), a subsidiary of the Collegiate Churches, is responsible for the oversight of the church’s extensive real estate and investment portfolio.

The Collegiate Churches with assistance from the consulting firm, The Whelan Group, is creating a transition plan and reviewing the reorganization of their leadership and governance structure spurred by the upcoming retirement of the current executive vice president and chief operating officer effective December 2018.

The transition plan includes hiring an Interim Chief Executive Officer (Interim CEO). Of crucial importance, is understanding that the professional accepting this role will be participating in a collective discernment process, already underway, focused on answering the question – in the 21st century, is the Collegiate Church of New York one church?

While there is much to celebrate about the Collegiate Churches of New York's positive and inclusive identity, there is more work to be done to create a cohesive and unifying identity for the Collegiate Churches as an entity, and how the individual five ministries relate to the Collegiate corporate staff functions.
