Salary: Commensurate with experience

The IIRR President will be responsible for providing strategic leadership to maximize organizational performance and achievement of its vision and mission, and managing the programs, personnel and operations in the international locations. Based in theUS, the IIRR President will focus on strengthening IIRR’s resource base to fund growing operations and expanding programs in the field.  The President will report directly to the Board of Trustees. 


  • Leadership and Strategic Direction
    • Lead IIRR in a collaborative manner that supports the organization’s mission as defined in its current 5-year strategy document
    • Provide strategic direction to the Institute to empower IIRR to further carry out its mission
    • Nurture development of IIRR’s human resources globally to ensure sustainability of capable and motivated staff at all levels of senior and regional management, as well as supervise the global management team
    • Assure that IIRR's programs are prudently expanded and carried out to fulfill its mission throughout the countries and regions it operates
  • Board Collaboration
    • Work with the Board and senior management to ensure that the mission of IIRR is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and building strategic partnerships
    • Communicate effectively with the Board regularly and accurately to enable the Board of Trustees to perform effectively its governance and oversight functions and to make informed decisions
  • Resource Development
    • Develop mechanisms to efficiently and sustainably acquire sufficient resources to ensure the financial health and growth of the organization
    • Establish strategic partnerships with other NGOs and institutional donors to enhance and maintain adequate financial resources necessary to support IIRR's mission
  • Financial Management
    • Develop and maintain systems to oversee efficient financial and program operations within the Board-approved budget and operating parameters
    • Oversee global consolidation of local/country/regional financial reporting, in coordination with CFO and senior financial team
    • Ensure fiscal integrity of IIRR to include timely submission to the Board of Trustees of the annual budget and monthly financial statements that accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization
  • Primary Spokesperson
    • Represent IIRR as chief spokesperson to various donors, partners and other constituencies
    • Serve as IIRR’s ambassador to the development community
    • Enhance IIRR's visibility in the development community by being active and visible in development organizations, industry conferences and directly with other interested professionals


  • A thorough knowledge of community development with at least 10 years’ experience in international development work
  • At least 10 years’ experience in a senior leadership role in one or more (x) not-for-profit organizations of a size and scope similar to those of IIRR, or (y) for-profit businesses with direct accountability for performance of the business or one of its divisions, including, in the case of either (x) or (y) above, managerial responsibility, directly and through subordinates, for a staff of at least 100 persons
  • Proven leadership experience in the not-for-profit sector and successful engagement with, and resource generation from international NGOs, bilateral and/or multinational organizations, or donor agencies
  • Demonstrated track record in resource development (identifying new sources and expanding funding from existing donors) from diverse sources for one or more international non-governmental organizations similar to IIRR and intimate understanding of institutional, corporate and individual donor climate in the USA
  • Knowledge of, and experience in, fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to the not-for-profit sector, especially with regards to programs in developing countries
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in resource development in Europe and Asia and with developing resources for Africa- and Asia-based programs
  • Track record of promoting diversity and an ability to build collaboration among diverse, multi-cultural teams and the community at large
  • Strong qualities as a manager, communicator, team leader, visionary, and facility with hands-on engagement of tasks and teams
  • High level of intelligence, intellectual curiosity and desire to explore new ideas and innovative approaches to solving community development problems
  • For non-US-based candidates, willingness to relocate to US, and for all candidates, to travel frequently (at least 4 intercontinental trips per year) to manage international programs and staff
  • Preference will be given to candidates holding a graduate degree (master’s or doctorate), particularly in a development-related field
