Staff Director/Executive Director

Annual salary $45,000. - 50,000., depending on experience.

Oregon Rural Action, a small multi-issue membership-based nonprofit based in La Grande, Oregon, seeks a full-time Staff Director with a passion for grassroots community organizing, social justice, and progressive social change. Responsibilities include working closely with a volunteer board of directors on strategic planning, fundraising, and financial management; recruiting and engaging members; developing organizing strategy; and training and supervising office and community organizing staff.

A member group of the Western Organization of Resource Councils, Oregon Rural Action was founded in eastern Oregon in 2001 with the goal of strengthening rural communities by promoting social justice, agricultural and economic sustainability, and stewardship of the region’s land, air, and water. Over this time members have worked on a wide range of locally-identified issues in Union, Malheur, Baker, Umatilla, Morrow, and Wallowa Counties, from increasing markets for local foods, to campaigning against anti-immigrant ballot measures, to limiting the transportation of oil-by-rail across rural Oregon and advocating for health care reform at both state and national levels. Following a budget shortfall in 2016, the board of directors launched a two-year rebuilding process that has included a five-county organizing assessment, a five-year strategic plan, and a coordinated campaign to strengthen relationships with grant funders and develop a more sustainable funding structure for the organization.

We are excited to again be in the position to hire a full-time Staff Director, a new full-time community organizer, and a new half-time administrative assistant, who will work together with our board, members, and part-time membership coordinator to continue growing the organization and strengthening the capacity of diverse community members to take collective action on issues that affect their lives. With significant grant funding committed for the next three years, ORA projects an annual operating budget of $150,000. in 2019 and $200,000. in 2020, with potential to increase both internal and external funding levels in coming years based on expanded membership and geographic reach.

Candidates for this position may come from a wide range of backgrounds, but should possess the following minimum qualifications:

  • Experience and/or significant training in community organizing as an approach to social change
  • Experience and/or significant training working in a non-profit setting, including internal and external fundraising (grant writing, reporting, and donor relationships)
  • Enjoy working with people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives and helping them work together to develop collective vision, goals, and strategies
  • Strong interpersonal skills, passion for social justice, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to set priorities and handle multiple competing responsibilities
  • Ability to train and supervise community organizing and office staff
  • Proficiency in and/or ability to learn basic word processing, database, and accounting programs (ex. Word, CiviCRM, Excel, Quickbooks)
  • Willingness to travel throughout rural eastern Oregon

Preference may be given to candidates with the following additional skills and experience:

  • Experience or education in sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, health care reform, rural community development, civic engagement, and/or social justice
  • Conversant in both Spanish and English
