Vice President of Administration and Operations

The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) is an independent, international, nonprofit organization devoted to the advancement of interdisciplinary research in the social sciences through a wide variety of workshops and conferences, fellowships and grants, summer training institutes, scholarly exchanges, research, and publications. The Vice President of Administration and Operations reports directly to the President of the SSRC and supervises directors in finance, human resources, information technology, and administration. This position will be part of the senior management team.



Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Participate with other members of the senior management team in strategic planning to define the future direction and growth of the SSRC.
  • Ensure that policies and practices are in alignment with the SSRC’s organizational mission, goals, and values.
  • Direct the internal management of the organization, including financial and policy issues. 
  • Oversee organizational policies and benefit plans, including professional development and training.
  • Provide advice and counsel to the senior management team regarding effective internal communication.
  • Promote interdepartmental teamwork and coordination across all departments.
  • Provide strong leadership in the management of the departments of finance, human resources, administration, and information technology. 
  • Work closely with the Director of Finance to prepare the annual operating budget and ensure compliance with budgetary guidelines.
  • Provide strategic guidance to the President on the budget, including financial projections and budget scenarios.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Information Technology to ensure systems are in place to best support the staff and organization. 
  • Consult with human resources on staffing structure.
  • Provide support to the President for the Board of Directors, including liaising with Board committees and developing Board meeting agendas.
  • Participate in leadership and other special projects as directed by the President.
  • Administer institutional data and research.



  • Bachelor’s degree required; MBA, MPA, MA/MS or PhD highly preferred. 
  • At least ten years of experience in the management of nonprofit, academic, or other relevant organizations. 
  • Must demonstrate relevant experience in strategic planning/implementation, financial and fiscal management, budget planning and forecasting, administrative management, and information technology resources. 
  • Strong leadership and management experience required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in all MS Office applications.
