The Vice President of Fund Development position is a remarkable opportunity for a successful development executive to advance our fund development strategy and drive funding to take the GSOC’s mission to the next level in building more female leaders for the 21st Century.


Position Summary


The Vice President of Fund Development is charged with the strategic direction and leadership of achieving the vision, mission and strategy for the Development function and is responsible for the achievement of annual Council fund development goals and objectives. This position reports to the CEO and serves as a member of the Council’s Executive Management Team. 


The VP of Fund Development works closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, Board Fund Development Committee and other key volunteer leaders to ensure the achievement of the Council’s fund development goals, promote philanthropic awareness of Girl Scouting, and advocate a strong case for support. Builds and maintains an effective network across civic and community, corporate, foundation, business and non-profit organizations. As the Council’s primary fundraiser, personally increases donor giving at all levels through solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship. 

Responsible for increasing the Council’s fundraising capacity through a strengthened culture of philanthropy demonstrated by increased major giving, planned giving, corporate and foundation giving, annual giving (including events and alumnae giving). Ensures legal compliance and use of best practices for gift administration and records management, resulting in excellent stewardship of donor and community giving.

Acts as a chief spokesperson to represent the organization to constituencies, both internal and external, for purposes of fund development. Functions well in a balanced culture which combines the richness and relevance of programs with the efficacy of best business practices, fiscal accountability, and institutional impact. 


Primary Responsibilities

  • In concert with the CEO and Board of Directors, leads the Council’s achievement of fund development goals and strategy to continue to strengthen the Council’s fund development program and chart the course for its future. 
  • Leads and actively participates in Council-wide fundraising efforts aligned through a comprehensive Fund Development plan to ensure the Council’s short-term and long-term achievement of goals and objectives. Focuses on the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of current and potential donors at all levels. Directly manages and increases results of major and planned gifts programs while strengthening “annual giving” appeals. Personally cultivates and secures major gifts and grants. Creates and identifies new funding opportunities and sources.
  • Works closely with the CEO to complete the Capital Campaign goal by achieving the final $1.8 million.
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintains accountability standards to donors, and ensures compliance with code of ethical principles and standards of professional fundraising conduct. Oversees performance measures, monitors results, and supports the CEO and Board of Directors in evaluating the effectiveness of the organization’s fund development program. 
  • Partners with the Finance department to assure sound fiscal operation of the Development function including timely, accurate and comprehensive development of charitable contributions income and expense budgets, reporting, monitoring and implementation.
  • Directs the Development staff to ensure that the department is structured and performing effectively. Oversees of all of the organization’s fund development activities, manages the day-to-day operations of the Development function, and monitors adequacy of activities through coordination with the CEO, staff and appropriate committees.
  • Manages, coaches, motivates and evaluates direct reports. Fosters employee development, engagement and retention.
  • Works collaboratively with Executive Team members to ensure the successful achievement of Council goals. Ensures that philanthropic efforts and fund development are carried out in keeping with the organization’s values, mission, vision and plans.
  • Collaborates with the CEO and Board leadership to manage the development and cultivation of the Board of Directors to strengthen the Board’s fundraising participation and results.



  • Significant experience as a senior Fund Development executive for a mid-size 501(c)(3) Non-profit organization. Proven record of quantifiable success in development which encompasses all areas of fund development.
  • A minimum of ten years of major gift fundraising with individuals and corporations in a professional capacity.
  • A minimum of five years senior management experience with increasing levels of responsibility and preferably with direct stewardship of Boards of Directors.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field. Additional professional training or certification in fund development is highly preferred.
  • Strong visionary and leadership skills. A results-oriented, strategic approach to Development with significant experience in strengthening organizational fund development effectiveness.
  • Passion for empowering leadership and success for girls within our community. Understanding of and passion for the Girl Scout vision and mission preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and operate strategically, build public support, strengthen infrastructure, inspire staff and the Board of Directors, and develop effective programs.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication and presentation skills. Ability to effectively engage diverse stakeholder groups, including the Board of Directors, and present to large groups.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and gain the support of varied and changing constituencies including staff, Board members, donors, potential donors, and volunteers.
  • Proactive, hands-on leader who collaborates and works effectively as part of an integrated team. Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate teams in a constructive, collaborative environment.
  • Proven ability to exercise good judgment in problem-solving and decision-making. 
  • Advanced ability to plan, set goals, manage projects, and achieve objectives.
  • Proven record of personal integrity, responsibility and ethical conduct.
  • Strong computer skills with competency in Microsoft Office Suite and fund development database software. Experience with Raiser’s Edge preferred.
