Chief of Staff
NYC COMMISSION ON RACIAL EQUITY (NYC CORE)

In November 2022, New York City voters overwhelmingly approved three ballot proposals that put racial equity and justice at the heart of city government, including the NYC Commission on Racial Equity (NYC CORE). The first of its kind in the nation, NYC CORE is an independent 15-member commission responsible for engaging diverse communities to guide and assess the City's racial equity planning process.
NYC CORE seeks a dynamic, motivated, detail-oriented and accomplished individual to serve as Chief of Staff. This position is an integral member of the NYC CORE Commission, serves as the primary advisor to the Chair and Commissioners on agency matters, and will focus on making improvements and efficiencies across the agency. Reporting to the Chair and Executive Director, the Chief of Staff will provide strategic and operational guidance, coordinate intra-agency projects, and be responsible for the administration, management, and oversight of all staff functions. The Chief of Staff will co-manage all Directors and Senior Directors.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a strategic partner and principal advisor to the Chair and Executive Director and NYC CORE Commissioners.
- Draft and review memos, briefing materials, presentations, reports, and other executive-level documents.
- Prepare agendas and materials for meetings and track follow-up actions to ensure timely execution.
- Manage information flow between the Chair and Executive Director's office and internal/external partners.
- Work with directors to improve standardization of workplace policies and processes.
- Provide troubleshooting assistance to the Chair, including identifying, triaging, and coordinating responses to issues.
- Serve as liaison to agency staff, other government entities, and the public.
- Reduce operational bottlenecks and increase organizational effectiveness and project management practices.
- Work with the Chair and leadership team on legislative affairs, public and intergovernmental matters, press and communications, strategic initiatives, and EEO issues.
- Build and maintain systems, processes, and tracking tools that improve coordination and accountability.
- Embed DEI and racial equity practices into the everyday functioning of the Commission.
Qualifications:
- Commitment to racial equity and a values-aligned role.
- Experience supervising communications, policy, research, and intergovernmental affairs staff, with at least six (6) years total experience managing staff.
- Demonstrated experience creating strategic plans and operationalizing those plans towards success.
- Experience working with senior leaders and making executive-level decisions.
- Strong familiarity with issues affecting Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, Middle Eastern, or Pacific Islander communities in New York City, or other marginalized groups.
- Relevant formal education can be helpful, such as in sociology, social work, public administration, public policy, or communications.
Salary: $170,000 per year. New York City residency is required within 90 days of appointment.
