Director of Financial Planning and Analysis

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis is responsible for the financial management, budgeting, and strategy of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Leading a team of 3 financial analysts, the Director is responsible for developing the School's $400M+ annual operating budget, multi-year financial plan, monthly forecasts, and management reporting, as well as frequent ad hoc analyses.
A key member of the Office of Financial Services leadership team, the Director partners closely with the CFO and regularly engages with administrative and departmental leaders across the Chan School. This highly visible role requires the ability to translate complex financial information into clear, compelling narratives for the Dean, Executive Dean for Administration, and other School and University leaders.
Applicants must have significant experience in sponsored research finance within a complex higher education, hospital, healthcare, or academic medical center environment; higher education experience strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct and oversee all aspects of the School's annual budget process
- Build and refine the School's multi-year financial plan, incorporating assumptions and scenario modeling
- Oversee management reporting for the CFO, School leadership, and University stakeholders
- Lead monthly forecasts to identify financial risks and opportunities
- Analyze monthly and year-end financial results and evaluate key drivers and trends
- Serve as key liaison to departments and to the University's finance team
- Provide leadership and direct management of a team of three financial analysts
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
- Minimum of 10 years' relevant work experience
- 7+ years of experience in sponsored research finance within a complex higher education, hospital, healthcare, or academic medical center environment
- Supervisory experience required
This is a fully remote position (must work in a Harvard-registered state); occasional on-site presence may be required. Standard schedule is 35 hours/week.
