The Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) seeks an experienced Director of Program Management (External Affairs) to provide senior operational leadership for advancement and revenue-generating functions, including gift processing, membership programs, ticketed events, facility rentals, and other earned revenue initiatives that support NZCBI's mission and growth. The role reports to the Director of External Affairs and requires an operationally strong, collaborative leader with deep experience in nonprofit revenue administration, financial oversight, event management, and staff supervision in a cultural or similar institution.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide supervisory leadership for professional staff overseeing gift processing, membership operations, events, earned revenue programs, and administrative services, including workload assignment, priority setting, performance evaluation, and workforce planning.
- Oversee advancement operations and revenue administration, including gift processing, revenue recording and reconciliation, fund management, data integrity, reporting, performance measurement, and compliance with Smithsonian financial, gift, and procurement policies.
- Lead operational execution of the NZCBI membership program, including membership levels, benefits, pricing, and acquisition campaigns, using market analysis and revenue forecasting to drive growth, retention, and earned revenue.
- Direct planning, execution, and financial evaluation of ticketed special events, facility rentals, and public programs, establishing performance metrics, quality controls, and operational standards to maximize profitability and visitor engagement.
- Develop and manage budgets across Advancement, Membership, Events, and Communications teams, lead procurement and contracting, manage vendor relationships, conduct financial forecasting, and advise senior leadership on multi-year business strategies.
Qualifications:
- Deep understanding of advancement operations, membership program administration, event revenue models, and financial management in a nonprofit or cultural institution.
- Demonstrated experience supervising professional and technical staff, managing performance, and supporting team development.
- Experience with budget formulation, financial forecasting, revenue reconciliation, multi-fund management, and contract/vendor negotiation.
- Proven skill in managing ticketed events, public programs, market analysis, and operational logistics.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present analytical reports and ensure compliance with complex organizational and federal policies.
