Director of Prospect Research and Strategic Insights

The Director of Prospect Research and Strategic Insights plays a critical role in advancing Harvard Business School's philanthropic priorities by leading prospect research, capacity analysis, and due diligence across External Relations and beyond.

Reports To: Managing Director of Development Services
Job Type: Full-time, Exempt
Salary Grade: 059

Key Responsibilities

Due Diligence Leadership

  • Serve as lead authority for due diligence across External Relations
  • Develop protocols aligned with Harvard University's gift acceptance policies
  • Provide timely risk assessments on prospective donors, corporations, and foundations

Strategic Prospect Research & Analysis

  • Oversee research strategies to identify, qualify, and prioritize major and principal gift prospects
  • Guide team in translating wealth indicators and philanthropic patterns into strategic insights
  • Lead methodologies for accurate capacity ratings

Lead Tracking & Systems

  • Direct design and use of lead tracking systems
  • Partner with ER IT to refine systems, models, and engagement scoring

Leadership & Team Development

  • Recruit, mentor, and develop a team of prospect researchers and analysts
  • Position the research team as a strategic thought partner to frontline fundraisers

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum 10 years progressive experience in prospect research, advancement services, or development strategy
  • Demonstrated expertise in capacity rating, wealth analysis, due diligence, and philanthropic risk assessment
  • Proven success in developing lead tracking systems and data-driven fundraising strategies

This is a hybrid position based on the Boston, MA campus (minimum 3 days per week onsite). A cover letter is required.
