Overview
The Office of Career Development & Professional Engagement at William & Mary empowers students and alumni to explore professional possibilities and navigate lifelong career development.
The Director of Public Service Careers is responsible for strategic program development & administration as well as career advising and programming for students pursuing careers in government, education, nonprofit and public safety. The Director works in partnership with academic programs across campus to engage undergraduate and graduate students in public service careers.
Salary: $70,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities
50% - Strategic Development and Administration:
- Maintain knowledge of employment trends and career opportunities in public service industries
- Lead, organize and implement industry trips and excursions supporting students' exposure to public service industries
- Collaborate in campus events involving employers, alumni, and families
- Create and maintain a network in relevant professional associations
45% - Career Advising & Programming:
- Serve as subject matter expert in career advising for students pursuing public service careers
- Create and present workshops and programs for career-related skills development
- Support students and alumni on self-assessment, career decision-making, resume writing, interviewing, and networking
- Conduct individual/group career advising sessions
5% - Performance Management:
- Supervise an Assistant Director
- Provide staff with constructive feedback and professional development plans
Required Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Counseling or related field
- Significant experience in career services (typically 7+ years)
- Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong computer skills including familiarity with career development platforms
- Knowledge of all public service career areas
- Experience with project and event management (typically 5+ years)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading a team, supervising staff, and professional development
- Previous experience in centralized career services with background in public service career services
- Experience with career services management platforms (Symplicity, 12Twenty, etc.)
