Following the remarkable 25-year tenure of JoAnn Birkholz, this search represents a significant leadership transition for one of the region's most respected health-focused foundations.
About Medica Foundation
The Medica Foundation is the charitable giving arm of Medica, a nonprofit health plan trusted by Midwesterners for over 50 years. Since its founding in 1992, the Foundation has invested more than $48 million through more than 2,200 grants, advancing its mission to improve the health of those in need by supporting community-led initiatives that advance health equity.
Position Summary
The Executive Director of the Medica Foundation provides leadership and direction to advance the Foundation's mission, vision, values and programs. This position reports to both the Vice President Public Affairs, and the Foundation Board Chair. The Executive Director is responsible for strategy, governance, operations, key partnerships, and internal/external representation, and works closely with executive leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership: Work with the Board to develop and execute the Foundation's vision, strategy, giving guidelines, and grantmaking priorities
- Governance & Operations: Collaborate with the Foundation Board to ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and fiduciary requirements
- Fiscal Management: Partner with the Board to ensure aligned investment strategies and oversee grantmaking processes
- Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the primary spokesperson for the Foundation with nonprofit partners, community leaders, media, and philanthropic networks
- Team Leadership: Recruit, mentor, and lead a high-performing staff team
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in philanthropy, nonprofit, social responsibility or related fields
- Strategic leadership experience guiding an organization through growth, change, or an inflection point
- Strong relationship-building skills across sectors and communities
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and community-led approaches
- Bachelor's degree minimum, advanced degree helpful
