EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Rise-NY (the dba of the SOS Shelter, Inc.) has been a part of the Southern Tier NY community since 1979. Since then, the agency has grown to provide a comprehensive list of services such as emergency shelter, advocacy, legal assistance, counseling, and community education. Rise’s mission is to assist families who experience or are threatened with domestic violence and to increase the community’s awareness of this pervasive problem. Rise is committed to the achievement of racial, ethnic and cultural diversity within its workplace, which will in turn provide the delivery of culturally competent care to the clients served.

The Executive Director is the key management leader of Rise-NY (herein after, “Rise”). The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs, and execution of the strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include agency advocacy, grant writing, fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.

This position’s duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

General Responsibilities

  • Financial Performance and Viability: Develop resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization through grant writing and other efforts.
  • Organization Operations: Oversee and implement appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate and effective.
  • Strategic Leadership: Work with Board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through advocacy-focused programs, strategic planning, and community outreach.
  • Governance: Work with Rise Board of Directors in order to fulfill Rise’s mission.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Engage in fundraising and actively develop revenue sources from grant sourcing and other revenue-generating opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with community partners and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance Rise’s Mission.
  • Serve as Rise’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media, and the public.
  • Oversee annual employee reviews, delegate as necessary to others in supervisory roles.
  • Report to and work closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising and to increase the overall visibility of the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

 

 

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in human services or a closely related field received from an accredited institution of higher learning required. A master’s degree in a human services field is strongly preferred. -OR-a combination of education and experience that in the opinion of the reviewing agency, exceeds the above standards.
  • Five years of verifiable work experience with a human service and/or non-profit agency in which significant portions of work time was spent in agency administration, personnel management, finance, and public relations. Prior experience in residence management is highly desirable.
  • In depth knowledge of business administration and ethics, grant writing, financial management, residence management, domestic violence, and public relations.

Skills/Aptitudes

  • The ability to effectively direct agency operations, lead, supervise and evaluate subordinates, delegate responsibility, and plan, organize and implement programs.
  • Proven ability to write successful grants and monitor reports to funders.
  • The candidate must demonstrate good judgment in determining priorities and applying agency policies to reflect positively on the Organization and its staff.
  • Must be able to work without supervision in stressful situations performing multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • It is essential that the Executive Director be able to establish an effective working relationship with both agency staff and the Board of Directors in order to develop sound policies that support and promote the agency’s mission.
  • Must be available to handle emergency situations on a 24-hour basis.
  • Must physically be able to perform required certifications and lift fifty (50) pounds.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with driving record acceptable to the agency’s insurance carrier guidelines.
