Public Health Assistant Laboratories Director

Purpose

The Public Health Assistant Laboratories Director oversees the day-to-day activities of the clinical laboratory for the City of Milwaukee Health Department, ensuring efficient operations and coordinating staff laboratory functions.

Salary: $104,997 - $123,106 annually (resident incentive: $109,197 - $128,030)

Essential Functions

Public Health Laboratory Management:

  • Plan and lead validation activities for new test implementation
  • Provide technical leadership in evaluation and validation of clinical test results for microbial testing including STDs, respiratory, and bio-threat agents
  • Ensure regulatory compliance (CLIA, CDC Select Agent Program, Laboratory Response Network)
  • Serve as CLIA Technical Supervisor for clinical diagnostic testing

Staff Management:

  • Oversee staff in Microbiology, Virology, Molecular, and Keenan sections
  • Manage quality assurance, safety, training, and personnel matters
  • Pursue grant opportunities with community partners
  • Develop policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures

Collaboration:

  • Liaise with CDC, FBI, state public health laboratory, and local hospitals
  • Present laboratory activities at local, state, national, and international conferences
  • Maintain academic relationships with local universities

Minimum Requirements

  • Must qualify as CLIA Technical Supervisor for Microbiology (bacteriology and/or virology) per 42CFR § 493.1449
  • Valid driver's license and access to adequately insured vehicle
