Position Summary
At Houston Methodist, the Vice President/Chief Operating Officer (COO) position is responsible for multiple departments assigned by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This position provides leadership and direction to these department heads and staff. The VP/COO position is responsible for the development and accomplishment of the strategic direction and operational objectives of multiple service lines, improving operational performance. This position is a key member of the executive management team of the hospital and may also serve as the hospital's Business Practice Officer when needed.
This position reports directly to the hospital CEO and has responsibilities that include providing management and oversight of multiple areas and entities, as appropriate, and driving Houston Methodist's mission, vision, values, and commitment to excellence. Demonstrating a proven record of successful strategic planning and long-range goal development and implementation, this position manages a diverse, interprofessional team, collaborating with stakeholders to achieve mutual goals. Directly and indirectly overseeing management staff with the goal of enhancing professional development and personal growth, this position forms and leads internal teams, providing training and mentorship as needed. This position collaborates with all senior leadership to meet the organization's objectives, ensuring operational initiatives are implemented, setting business goals, and solving internal issues when needed. Responsible for assigned areas' policy and procedure development, revision, and implementation, this position is also accountable for employee engagement, adequate staffing levels, and budget development and compliance to ensure a safe and effective work environment, while ensuring compliance with ethical and legal business practices and accreditation/regulatory/government regulations.

Qualifications
Education:
- Master's degree, e.g., Nursing, Healthcare Administration (MHA), Master of Business Administration (MBA)
Experience:
- Ten years of directly related leadership experience with at least eight years in a management role within an acute care, public, and/or academic healthcare system, demonstrating a high level of understanding of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; may consider a current HM leader with seven years of management experience
- Leadership experience including accountability over multiple operational areas with a successful track record of strategic planning, change management, operational/clinical integration within a system, clinical/quality management, financial management, and community involvement
- Executive or senior leadership experience preferred
Licenses and Certifications (Preferred):
- Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE)

- Ability to work under pressure and balance competing priorities; highly responsive and solution/action oriented
- Proficiency in spreadsheet, word processing, and presentation software
- Demonstrated ability to lead others toward common organizational goals and to mentor and develop staff to foster positive employee engagement
Key Responsibilities
- Provides direction to the management team to enable effective and efficient completion of objectives; holds direct reports accountable for staff development
- Builds strategic relationships between departments to achieve business goals and fosters open communication and mutual problem-solving
- Develops efficient organizational structures and provides leadership to maintain a competent, engaged employee group
- Attends Board of Trustees meetings and provides updates in areas of responsibility
- Works closely with medical staff leadership to meet quality and strategic goals
- Develops and implements strategic and operational projects and processes, setting clear goals and priorities for the management team
- Drives HM service standards to positively impact patient/customer satisfaction scores
- Manages multiple service lines and implements strategies aligned with the hospital's overall strategic plan
- Reviews service levels and trends impacting patient care and operational objectives, guiding root cause analyses and continuous improvement
- Monitors organizational compliance with safety, environmental, and accreditation requirements
- Ensures departments' operational and capital budgets align with the organization's strategic plan, using benchmark data to support performance and ROI
- Develops long-range goals and strategic plans, maintaining awareness of market and industry trends
- Initiates and executes succession plans and supports direct reports' development plans

On-Call: Yes (may be required during emergencies)
Travel: May require travel within and outside the Houston Metropolitan area
