Finance jobs in foundations

Explore finance work within foundations.

The work in this setting

Plan and monitor resources so organizational commitments are financially workable. Finance leadership differs from processing every accounting transaction, although the two functions depend on each other's information.

What makes the sector matter

A foundation career may support grantmaking, institutional operations, or relationships with communities and other organizations. Making grants is different from seeking grants for a charity.

Questions for this employer

Ask who makes award decisions, how staff assess proposals, and which administrative responsibilities belong to the role. Ask who owns forecasts, who approves budgets, how restricted funding is reflected, and how managers receive timely information.

Experience and responsibility

Show experience translating financial information into decisions and explaining tradeoffs to colleagues outside finance. In this setting, connect that experience to the institution’s actual programs and relationships. Ask who provides the sector knowledge you need and which decisions you will be responsible for yourself. The intersection is narrower than either parent: an opening should fit both the function and the institutional setting, not just contain a familiar word.

Reading a related opening

The postings below are a conservative search of the current job list: the sector must appear in the employer or description, and the function must match the job title. They are related results, not a promise that every responsibility in this guide belongs to every listed role. Read the full description and the employer’s stated requirements before applying.
