What the work looks like

A fundraiser connects an organization’s work with people and institutions willing to support it. An ordinary week might include preparing an appeal, meeting a donor, reviewing a proposal with program staff, and checking that a promised follow-up happened. The mix depends on the job. A small development office may combine several activities in one position; a larger team may separate annual giving, major gifts, grants, donor relations, and gift planning.

Who needs this work

Charitable organizations and educational institutions use fundraising to support their programs and long-term goals. That is different from treating fundraising as a series of unrelated requests. When assessing a job, ask what the organization wants to fund and whether program leaders can help explain those needs to supporters.

Background and reporting

Read the stated requirements rather than assuming one route into the profession. Some positions require prior donor-facing experience; others emphasize writing, research, project coordination, or management alongside fundraising knowledge. Ask whether the role reports to a development director, a chief advancement officer, or the organization’s executive. The employer should identify that relationship. Also ask who controls the donor database, communications calendar, and budget for the work.

Keep the specialties distinct

Major gifts work centers on individual donor relationships and substantial commitments as defined by the institution. Planned giving adds a different kind of conversation about future or structured support. A fundraising page can introduce those specialties without presenting them as identical jobs.
