Director of Finance and Student Services

The Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA), one of the largest nonprofit arts education organizations in California, is seeking a Director of Finance and Student Services. Reporting to the Executive Director and serving as a vital member of the Management Team, this hands-on leader defines the processes and builds the infrastructure and systems that support CSMA's financial growth and sustainability. The role demands sharp business acumen and a roll-up-your-sleeves mentality. The Director will navigate complex financial structures and operations across multiple overlapping programs, work strategically with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors Finance Committee, and directly supervise the finance and registration/student services team to keep CSMA financially sustainable, highly efficient, and fully compliant with all nonprofit regulations. Financial Management: Supervise day-to-day accounting including fund accounting, general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and cash flow; lead month-end close, reporting, and monthly variance analysis; develop policies and procedures for accuracy and financial integrity; supervise and mentor two finance staff; partner with program directors on grant and contract management; and serve as primary contact for financial institutions and insurance brokers. Budgeting and Forecasting: Direct the entire end-to-end annual budgeting cycle, developing master operational budgets, revenue and spending plans, and forecasts, and work with program managers to evaluate cost drivers and set optimized pricing strategies for each program. Board and Finance Committee: Serve as the primary staff support for the Finance Committee, assist with financial reporting and forecasting, and present finance reports to the Board quarterly. Compliance and Audit: Develop and enforce internal financial and accounting policies; ensure statutory requirements are met including charitable status and payroll taxes; and serve as the main point of contact for the annual financial and nonfinancial audit. Qualifications: 10 years of significant financial and accounting experience, including 5+ years of supervisory experience in nonprofit financial management and operations leadership. Compensation: $150,000 to $165,000 per year. Full-time, exempt. On-site at CSMA in Mountain View, California.
