Director of Media Relations and Executive Communications

The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) seeks a Director of Media Relations and Executive Communications to craft and execute communications strategy for the Council's president. Reporting to the Vice President for Global Communications, this leader will elevate the president's profile as CFR's brand ambassador through proactive media engagement and thought leadership.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and execute proactive strategies for the president's media engagement on geopolitical and geoeconomic issues. Build and maintain relationships across diverse media outlets. Draft briefing memos, talking points, Q&As, op-eds, newsletters, and long-form articles. Collaborate with the Digital audience strategy team to expand the president's social media presence via video, photos, and live events. Identify innovative media engagement opportunities through partnerships, collaborations, and events.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field.

Experience: 7-10 years of relevant experience in media relations and public affairs; experience supporting institutional principals preferred.

Knowledge/Skills: Familiarity with the foreign policy media ecosystem; proficiency in media tracking tools (MuckRack, Cision, Meltwater); superior writing, verbal, and digital communications skills; ability to provide counsel to senior executives.

Requirements: Must be based in the Washington, DC office at least three days per week (transitioning to four days starting September 14, 2026). Demonstrated ability to engage with reporters, editors, and producers. Capacity to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Ability to draft statements, talking points, and Q&As.

Salary Range: $145,000 - $155,000
