Salary $125,000 - $130,000 per year

The Barr Foundation in Boston is hiring a Manager, People & Talent. Founded in 1997, Barr is one of the largest charitable foundations in New England, with assets over $3 billion and a 2026 grantmaking budget of $130 million. Its grants focus on arts and creativity, climate, and education, plus support for New England's social sector.

The Manager reports to the Vice President of People and Talent and runs the foundation's core HR work: recruiting, onboarding, employee relations, performance management and employee engagement, with a supporting role in learning and organizational development.

What you will do

• Lead recruiting from job description to reference checks, including posting channels, screening and the interview panel process
• Maintain and improve the applicant tracking system and manage the vendor relationship
• Run onboarding, with a focus on the first 90 days, and lead an overhaul of the onboarding process
• Advise employees on HR policies and workplace concerns, support leave and accommodation processes, and help with disciplinary matters and investigations
• Administer the annual performance review process, including goal setting and manager training
• Coordinate with Grants Management, Finance and IT on HR contracts and budgets, and manage temporary staff and HR consultants

Requirements

• Five to seven years of HR experience, preferably at a nonprofit or foundation
• Strong judgment, discretion with confidential information, and the ability to manage several projects at once
• Experience with applicant tracking systems (Greenhouse preferred) and Microsoft Office

Starting salary $125,000 to $130,000. The foundation works on a hybrid schedule, with staff in its North End offices on the Boston waterfront Tuesday through Thursday.
