Research institutions need scientific work and the administration supporting projects, people, and resources. A researcher, a grants manager, and an executive do not have interchangeable assignments.
Questions to ask
Ask which projects or units the job supports and how responsibility is divided between research leaders and administrative colleagues.
Choose the function deliberately
A mission is not a job description. Decide whether you want to lead a program, manage an organization, support its finances, communicate its work, or help fund it. Those functions can sit within the same institution while requiring different experience. Ask the employer which department owns the position and how it works with the people delivering the mission.
Background and responsibility
Read the qualifications tied to the actual assignment. Where specialist knowledge is required, a general management background may not replace it. Where the job is administrative or donor-facing, an interest in the mission does not establish the practical skills needed. Prepare examples of the work you have done and questions about the support available. Confirm the team, reporting line, and decisions that belong to the position.
