The Door, in partnership with Broome Street Academy, seeks an experienced Director of Human Resources Operations to lead HR initiatives and provide strategic support to two independent nonprofit organizations serving New York City youth.

The Door is an unparalleled model for youth development, offering comprehensive integrated services for 11,000 New York City youth annually. We empower young adults to reach their full potential by providing health care, education, mental health counseling, crisis assistance, legal assistance, college preparation, career development, housing supports, arts, sports, nutritious meals - all free and under one roof.
About Broome Street Academy:
Co-located at The Door, Broome Street Academy is a unique charter high school serving 330 students in grades 9-12. The school prepares NYC's most vulnerable youth for a successful future through rigorous academics paired with comprehensive support from The Door.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Managing Director / Chief People & Operating Officer, the Director of HR Operations ensures operational alignment, strategic execution, and executive support of the Human Resources department. This critical leadership role serves as a trusted advisor advancing a culture of service, inclusion, and operational excellence in a shared service environment.
Key Responsibilities:
HR Leadership:
• Collaborate with HR Leadership and Payroll teams to drive execution of the HR Strategic Plan
• Manage strategic projects related to employee learning, engagement, and technology-enhanced service delivery
• Anticipate organizational needs and support the HR Leadership team
• Ensure seamless coordination to elevate visibility and impact of HR
Operations Oversight:
• Manage day-to-day administrative operations ensuring high-performing HR operation
• Facilitate execution of HR goals managing timelines and accountability
• Maintain department dashboard with performance metrics
Employee & Labor Relations:
• Provide guidance on employee relations and labor union matters balancing business needs and risk
• Handle consultative expertise on basic to complex employee relations matters
• Respond to and investigate employee complaints
• Attend employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations
Recruitment:
• Guide hiring managers on salary recommendations using internal/external data
• Prepare monthly reports and analysis for senior leadership
• Maintain current job descriptions with union approval as needed
• Develop training modules for managers on staffing, recruitment, retention
HR Expertise:
• Respond to routine HR questions and direct to appropriate team members
• Administer HR programs including compensation, benefits, leave, recruitment, performance management
• Conduct exit interviews and analyze feedback
• Maintain compliance with employment laws and best practices
• Work with managers on promotions and compensation changes
• Direct supervision of HR generalists and specialists
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, Organization Development, Psychology or related field (Master's preferred)
• PHR or SHRM-CP certification preferred
• 5+ years progressive Human Resources leadership
• Experience working with labor unions required (unionized nonprofit preferred)
• Experience working with leadership in advisory capacity
• Experience with Paycom software and HRIS/ATS systems required
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet target goals
• Professional demeanor with sound judgment, critical thinking, integrity
• Detail-oriented with excellent communication, organizational, time management skills
• Knowledge of federal, state, local employment practices
• Proficient with MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word)
• Multilingual candidates encouraged (French, Spanish, Arabic preferred)
Salary: $95,000-$120,000 annually
Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm, 35 hours/week (hybrid)
Location: New York, NY (555 Broome Street, SoHo)
